Password protection vs. requiring an email
Found under a gallery's Access and Privacy & Selling tabs -- these are two separate tools, and you can use either, both, or neither.
Password protection
Set a password on a gallery under its Access tab. A visitor has to enter it before seeing anything. Leave the password field blank and save to remove protection entirely.
Requiring an email
A separate checkbox under Privacy & Selling -- instead of (or in addition to) a password, a visitor enters their email before viewing the gallery. This is useful even without a password: it tells you who's actually looking at your gallery, and it links their favorites to their email so you can see who liked what under Gallery Visitors in your sidebar.
These aren't mutually exclusive -- you can require both a password and an email if you want the strictest control.
