Why we started Image Depot

Image Depot didn't start in a boardroom. It started with two people looking at the photography industry from two very different perspectives and realizing there had to be a better way.

I'm a photographer. I've spent years working in the photography business and dealing with the realities that come with it -- shooting thousands of images, managing large galleries, delivering photos to clients, selling prints and digital downloads, dealing with storage, and, most importantly, taking care of the people who trust us with their memories.

Mason is an IT engineer. He understands technology, infrastructure, systems, security, and what it takes to build software that can actually handle the demands placed on it.

As we talked about the tools photographers were using, we kept seeing the same problems. There were gaps in the technology, but there were also some pretty significant gaps in customer service.

Photographers need more than a platform that technically works. When something goes wrong with a gallery, an order, a download, or an account, you need to be able to get help from someone who understands what you're actually trying to accomplish. We saw too many situations where customer service felt disconnected from the people actually using the platform and from the business those photographers were trying to run.

Eventually, we started asking ourselves a pretty simple question: why don't we build the system we wish we had?

That's where Image Depot was born.

Photography and technology, built for how photographers actually work

We wanted to bring together the two things we each understand best -- photography and technology -- and build something specifically for photographers.

We wanted to build something that actually fit the way photographers work. A system that could handle everything from a single portrait session to thousands of images from a tournament, while still giving the photographer control over their galleries, their branding, and how they sell their work. We didn't want photographers constantly worrying about arbitrary image limits or fighting with a platform just to deliver photos to their clients. We wanted the technology to get out of the way and let photographers focus on what they do best -- creating great images and running their business.

A company that actually listens

Just as importantly, we wanted to build a company that actually listens to its customers.

We don't believe customer service should be an afterthought. If you're trusting us with your business, your images, and your clients, you should be able to reach real people who understand what you're doing. And because we're still photographers ourselves, the feedback we get from other photographers isn't just a support ticket to us. It's information we can use to make the product better.

Your photos. Your clients. Your brand. Your money.

We also believe photographers should have ownership and control over their work.

Your photos should be yours. Your clients should be yours. Your brand should be yours. And the money you earn should stay yours.

That philosophy is at the heart of Image Depot.

We're not trying to build another generic photo-sharing platform. We're building the platform we wanted for ourselves -- combining real-world photography experience with the technical knowledge needed to build something dependable, scalable, and easy to use.

And we're still using it ourselves. That's important to us. We're not building from a distance and guessing what photographers need. We're photographers and technology people solving problems that we see firsthand. When something doesn't make sense, we question it. When our customers have a better idea, we listen. And when we see a way to make someone's workflow easier, that's what we want to build.

Every feature we add and every decision we make comes back to one simple question: would this actually make a photographer's life easier?

If the answer is yes, we build it. If it doesn't, we rethink it.

Image Depot exists because we believe photographers deserve better -- better tools, better support, more control, and a company that understands the business they're actually running.

This isn't just software we decided to sell to photographers. It's the system we wanted for ourselves.

And we're just getting started.
