How an order moves from pending to paid

Every order has one of three real statuses.

Pending -- checkout was started but payment hasn't completed yet. Nothing has been charged.
Paid -- payment succeeded. This is when print orders get created and digital downloads become available.
Cancelled -- either a pending order that never completed, or a paid order that was refunded. Both end up in the same final state.

You can see every order and its status under Orders in your sidebar, and filter to just pending ones to catch abandoned checkouts.
